Recognising the increasing importance of automated information systems to increase operator and production efficiencies within glass plants we then set about investigating the availability of an industry specific IT package back in November 2003. After several site visits to prospective suppliers and after numerous on site
demonstrations, the company has decided to go with Hanic GmbH, a German software supplier with a proven track record in the UK. The initial software was loaded on to dedicated servers in October 2004 and staff training commenced in November 2004.
Customer, supplier and product data input will be on going through November and December of this year as well as the first few months of 2005, and anticipated go live date in April 2005 is eagerly awaited by all members of staff within the glass plants. The software package will eventually handle all aspects of Glass & Glazing Divisions operations in Aberdeen and Livingston as well as the glass side of the Elgin branch business. Estimating, order entry, glass usage optimisation, production scheduling, bar-coding production, despatch and delivery control, invoicing and credit control are all features of the package, which represents a total investment approaching £1m for the Glass & Glazing Division. Livingston's Divisional Manager Steve Bain stated,
"Software investment not only improves our administrative
operating efficiencies throughout the branches involved, but augments the significant investment in machinery that has been made throughout the Glass & Glazing division in the last two years. All major items of machinery will have the ability to fully interact with the software, which will bring significant benefits to production, operations and efficiencies".
