The Challenge:
To design a glass staircase within the curved stairwell of a house with minimum visible structure to create a spacious and airy ambiance.
Glass Stairs
Our Solution:
Toughened/laminated glass risers were designed as cantilevered supports for glass treads . The structural risers penetrate the stair drum
and are bolted between steel columns situated behind the stair wall. The
effect is the glass appears to come out of the wall.
Tapered glass treads were then aligned and connected to the structural
risers with specially designed stainless bolts with a chemical mortar
seal.
A glass landing was also incorporated within the design. The stair
treads and landing were given a special non slip surface treatment to a
particular design. Provision was made within the design of the riser to
accommodate a bolted stainless steel handrail, which would be fitted at a
later date.
