The black and white photograph shows a fresh faced Dennis Notman, circa 1962, heating a hand applied bitumen roll to the edge of a very early double glazing unit. The edge of the unit comprised a desiccant filled aluminium tube complete with hand sawn grooves. The hermetic seal was provided by a combination of the bitumen, hand heated with a gas heater supplied by the gas company next door, finished off with a two part Thiokol compound. It is not clear from the photo what is on Dennis's mind, but it's a fair bet that it would have been the fairer sex if it had been Monday to Thursday, and, football, if it had been a Friday.
How does this compare with how we make hermetically sealed double glazing units today? In a nutshell, 1 automatic glass washing machine, 2 industrial robots, one to apply SuperSpacer Triseal, and one to apply 2-part polyurethane secondary seal, 1 automatic gas flood press, all contained in 42 metres of brand spanking new technology from the leading dg line manufacturer in the world, Lisec.
